Orthopedic and Sports Medicine
Orthopedic physical therapy is centered around the musculoskeletal system. Our team starts with a thorough evaluation which is essential in implementing an individualized treatment plan. There are many disorders that affect our muscles, joints, bones, tendons and ligaments. At Best Health Physical Therapy we specialize in treating these conditions.
Neurological (Stroke, Acquired Brain Injury, Parkinson’s, Etc.)
Neurological problems are abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord or in the nerves leading to or from them. This can result in symptoms which include paralysis, impaired vision, muscle weakness, poor coordination, loss of sensation and pain. The inability to walk and loss of functional independence may occur. A thorough neurological evaluation including balance assessment will determine which therapy interventions would be most helpful to enhance quality of life.
Pre-Op. and Post-Op.
We will educate our pre-op patients about the upcoming surgery including exercises, ways to reduce swelling, pain and if applicable the use of assistive devices and what to expect from therapy after surgery. Post-op we will follow the physicians protocol (where applicable) to return the patient to their desired level of function.
We will teach you how to protect your joints, properly stretch and strengthen to help support the affected joint, as well as educate you about your type of arthritis. If necessary, walking aids and modalities can be used to control pain.
There are different types of fractures. Usually a minimum of 6-8 weeks are needed for the fracture to heel. After the bone has healed it is necessary to regain full range of motion of the joint, regain normal strength of surrounding muscles that may have atrophied and ensure the patient is able to return to prior activities.
Fall Risks / Fall Prevention / Balance Problems
In the United States the odds of falling after the age of 65 are 1 in 3. Falls are the leading cause of injury and injury related death in older adults. As people age they are more likely to fall because of age related changes such decreased strength, sensation and medical conditions. We target areas which are affected and individualize a program to minimize the risk of falls.
Osteoporosis affects 28 million Americans. It causes bones to become brittle and thin making people more likely to sustain a fracture. We can teach you strengthening exercises, work on balance and posture to reduce stress on your bones. Education is also very important to identify potential hazards in the home and your environment.
Quick Fact: The average person walk s as many as 70,000 miles in their lifetime. As you can tell foot problems are very common. The foot and ankle support tons of pressure each day and so poor mechanics can yield problems not only in the foot and ankle but also to the knee, hip and even as far up as the back. We are very familiar with these relationships and carefully study each individuals gait and mechanics to get to the source of the problem.
Neck and Back Injuries
Back pain is one of the most common complaints among adults in the United States. It is the 2nd most common reason for visiting a doctors office. Through our thorough evaluation we identify the causes and individualize a program towards recovery. We also educate our patients about posture and body mechanics which play an important role in recovering from back pain.
When abnormal stresses are placed on a joint it may become painful. These stresses may come in the form of a direct injury or prolonged stresses on a joint. We will use modalities to decrease pain and inflammation as well as aim our treatment at the underlying cause of the problem.
It can be very frustrating for an athlete to have an injury and be away from the sport which they love. Our rehab is sport specific and is geared to get the athlete back to competition as quickly and safely as possible.
Posture and Body Mechanics
A very important part of therapy especially with neck and back injuries is postural assessment and education. Research suggests that many spine problems are preventable because they are the result of poor posture and body mechanics. Once injured, poor posture will delay recovery. We emphasize postural education as well as body mechanics with our patients.
Work Related Injuries
We work with many patients injured on the job. Our goal is to decrease their pain, help the patient return back to work and be able to perform their job safely without further risk of injury.
